Bury Me With My Pearls: If Only the Old Kitchen Table Could Talk

I’m ecstatic that my book, Bury Me With My Pearls is now available in AUDIO! Best of all, I wanted to share with ya’ll that I personally read every word because you just can’t fake a Southern accent! If you want to know what you’re in store for when you listen to my full book (hint: a lot of laughter and a few tears) you can view the excerpt below which was ripped straight from the pages of Bury Me With My Pearls.

“The more this table ages, the better it looks,” said the salesperson when Thomas and I bought our kitchen table. Years later that statement would have more meaning than the aging of the wood.

I dusted the kitchen table and saw the words, “Daniel C. Herlong” imprinted in the grain of the wood. I remember that was the time when Thomas father’s, Daddy Big John, was teaching Holmes and Caroline how to write cursive. The lesson was obviously repeated several times. Now we have an indelible memory of my father-in-law’s signature to cherish.

miss-south-carolinaYa’ll want to hear something exciting? My book, Bury Me With My Pearls, is now available in AUDIO! I personally read every word because you simply can’t fake a Southern accent! I wanted to share my Southern stories my way with a little Gullah influence plus a few stories with a hint of a “Nathern” accent. Just what are you in store for when you listen to Bury Me With My Pearls? Read an excerpt from the book below!

“Several years ago, I was asked to judge the Miss Mississippi Pageant. During my stay in the great beauty queen state of Mississippi, was the anniversary of the day I won the title of Miss South Carolina.

Too boot, Miss Mississippi whooped me at the Miss America Pageant.

Get Rid Of Anxiety Once And For All

I will never forget the day I started cleaning out our freezer. To be honest, I kept putting stuff in that chest freezer and closing the lid. The day came when the lid would not shut; it was time to organize and throw away all of the anxiety that was the contents of the freezer…

Digging through the layers of frozen stuff, I kept hearing a song from the Disney movie, “Frozen.” Let it go, let it go …I saw Ziploc bags dated in indelible ink that were older than my college-aged children. I tried to avoid asking Thomas for his help but I became overwhelmed with the task. I dreaded Thomas finding the buried bags of Game he had prepared for the freezer. It was a big assignment since there were so many things I wanted to hold onto but needed to throw away.

How to Enhance Your Writing Career

Tucked away in the “desire of my heart” was writing. This desire could have come to screeching halt when my English college professor handed me the bright red “F” on my first English writing assignment. As a professional speaker, back of the room sales and product development is always important, so I gave my first book a go. Surprisingly, people liked my little book entitled, “Bare Beet to High Heels; You Don’t have to be a Beauty Queen to be a Beautiful Person.” As a humorist speaker who presents inspirational presentations, I decided to take the plunge attend a conference and learn how to start a writing career.Tucked away in the “desire of my heart” was writing.  This desire could have come to screeching halt when my English college professor handed me the bright red “F” on my first English writing assignment.  As a professional speaker, back of the room sales and product development is always important, so I gave my first book a go. Last week, Alton Gansky, the Director of the Blue Ridge Writer’s Christian Writers Conference, asked me to share my journey combining my talents as a funny keynote speaker and writer. Thanks to a great team;  Eddie Jones of Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas, Tim Burns and Meaghan Burnett, my latest book, “Bury Me with My Pearls” has been in the top ten in twenty Amazon categories.  I hope this Youtube interview will help both writers and professional speakers in their pursuit of combining their talents. How to Enchance Your Writing Career

Susan Connelly’s Purple Casket; Live Life to the Fullest

Susan Connelly is someone I refer to as my “pearl-friend.” Since the release of my book, “Bury Me With My Pearls” I like to remember those jewels in my life who have added meaning to my strand of pearls called, life. Susan was one of those treasured women. She was "buried with her pearls," and Susan’s purple casket reminds me of to live life to the fullest.

Susan had more energy than any other person I had ever known and loved to entertain. Her invitations always read, “meet at the purple house.”  The chartreuse, wood-paneled station wagon parked against her purple house shouted Susan and Charlie Connelly’s love for fun. Your senses were on over-load with the color of the house followed by laughter and the smell of delicious Southern food. Susan’s flair for Southern hospitality and wonderful gatherings bring back some of my best memories.

The Dysfunctional Family Thanksgiving 2013

Let’s face it, there are many families that will be popping a Valium or other drugs to get through the Holidays . Oh, yes. In honor of these brave family members, The dysfunctional family Thanksgiving 2013 may need a song. I have written a new parody to the tune of the hit song, We are Family, by Sister Sledge. Here is a snippet of the chorus: We are family, We Live dysfunctionally, We are family, Everybody needs therapy…..#pearlsbookLet’s face it, there are many folks in  families who will be popping a Valium or other drugs to get through the Holidays .  Oh, yes.  In honor of these brave family members, I have written a new parody to the tune of the hit song, We are Family, by Sister Sledge. The dysfunctional family Thanksgiving 2013 may need a song.  Here is a snippet of the chorus:

We are Family

We live dysfunctionally…We are family…Everybody needs therapy…..

I imagine the first Thanksgiving was not that pleasant.  I bet some of those  sistah Pilgrims were mad at their husbands for dragging them across the big pond.  I bet they threatened to swim back to England many times.  “Oh, really!” said the hormonal sistah Pilgrim. “I’ll show you and sail that Mayflower right back home.  Momma told me to marry that cute English butcher.” Maybe this is why turkey is such a tradition to be consumed at Thanksgiving  since it has a chemical in the meat that puts you to sleep. The Pilgrims actually were pre-yankees and if I-95S had been invented, they would have hit the road….. bound for Dade County.

Facebook? I’m so Old I Need a Ouija Board to Contact My Friends.

I love listening to the wisdom of my older friends. There is a wealth of information and insight that only older folks understand. In my new book, “Bury Me with My Pearls,” I talk about those precious pearls of wisdom. Here is a good one: “Facebook? “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine……” “Sometimes,” says Roger Rabbit, “the only weapon we have is a laugh.” Amen. I have always heard that tragedy plus time equals comedy. My question is, “Can you find the humor?” No disrespect meant when horrible things happen but humor and levity can be healing. One of my dearest friends pre-maturely lost her husband to cancer. As we watched and waited in the hospital for the inevitable, she looked and me and said, “I just hope he does sit up in bed and yell out the name of his old girlfriend.” I knew, right then, she was going to be ok.
