Future Farmers of America- Amazing Leaders

Alabama FFA cropped

This past week I was honored to recapture my unforgettable experience of speaking for the National Future Farmers of America last October in Louisville, KY.  I spoke for South Carolina FFA and Alabama FFA entitling my speech, “Don’t Throw Tomatoes at my Field of Dreams.”  As always, these young people are set apart from the stereo-type of modern day youth.

I started my speech by saying that they are coined “Millennials” and I had both good news and bad news about their generation.

“There are 80 million of you and you are called Millennials.  Most of you were born between 1980 and the year 2000.Time magazine published a story in May of 2013 titled “The Me Me Me Generation,” it begins: “They’re narcissistic. They’re lazy. They’re coddled. They’re even a bit delusional. Those aren’t just unfounded negative stereotypes; they’re backed up by a decade of sociological research. ” Here is the good news.  Here are a few exceptions to this research; small town kids, children reared on a farm and immigrants.”

FFA-Passion and Purpose to Make a Difference

Singing at FFA

I wish you had been there … 60,000 outstanding young men and women gathered in Louisville, Kentucky for the 87th Annual Future Farmers of America Convention.  One day, these young people will take over this country. These students are leaders; they are innovative and savvy.  They are thought leaders, excellent communicators and have a passion to make a difference in the world – no kidding! By request, here is the song I sang with FFA convention pics on YouTube, You Can Grow.

It was an honor to give away my book, Bare Feet to High Heels that is a continuation of my message.  You can download it for free; my gift to these wonderful young people. www.janeherlong.com/ffa

When I walked into the coliseum on Wednesday afternoon for the opening session and saw thousands of youth dressed in the traditional dark blue FFA jackets dancing, singing and celebrating in unison their beloved FFA, tears flooded in my eyes. The experience was unforgettable.

Bud Walpole Does the Right Thing-Not Racism

BUD WalpoleWhen my cousin called and told me about Bud Walpole being fired from coaching due to claims of racism, I sounded like an owl, “Who?” Who?” I asked.  I, like many who have known Bud all of our lives, was stunned.  Bud Walpole is one of the kindest Christian gentlemen I have ever known. If Bud Walpole thought he was hurting anyone, he would do what he always tells the young people he influences, “Do the right thing.” This is reflected in Bud’s class act apology.

So who are the racists here? Maybe the person/persons pointing fingers.  How shameful and disgraceful for the Charleston County School Board to remove a person who parents pray their children will encounter as a coach. In an era when father figures are missing from our culture, men like Bud Walpole are priceless.

Advice for Youth from “Diamond” Lillian Hughes

FFA Keynote Speakers “What advice for youth would you share?”  I posted this question on Facebook last week.  The answer is important to me since I am the closing speaking for Future Farmers of America October 31 LIVE on Rural 345 Direct TV. @NationalFFA My answer came the following day when I sat in First Baptist Church in Johnston, South Carolina at Lillian “Diamond” Hughes’ Celebration of Life Service. Yes, it was as genuine and sparkling as a pure-cut diamond…just like Lillian.  Her son, Bill shared great advice for youth from his mother, Lillian Hughes or as we called her, “Diamond Lil.”

“My mother taught me three things:  communicate with people in a manner that they can understand. She also taught me patience.” “Lastly,” Bill continued, “my mother taught me to have respect for others.”
