How to Experience Extragavant Joy

Bree Boyce Marsh chooses JOY! My buddy and Miss South Carolina “sistah” made a decision several years ago that changed her life in a dramatic way.

It is Miss South Carolina week and in honor of this exciting event and the theme of my new book, “Rhinestones on My Flip-Flops,” I thought of Bree Boyce Marsh. Bree possesses many of the same qualities I highlight in a chapter in my book entitled, “Fearless and Fabulous Esther.”  Like queen Esther, Bree is brave, bold and beautiful. But it did not start out that way.

Bree was 17 years old and weighed in at 234. She was unhappy and traveling down a road with an unhealthy end. She made a dramatic decision. Bree began an extensive fitness program that turned this young woman into a new person. She lost 114 lbs. and went from a size 18 to a size 4. You see, Bree chose a challenging path but her journey led to extravagant JOY.

And The Winner Is…

flips

I was new to the world of pageantry. Interview always grabbed my interest until my pageant coach (yes, they exist, especially in the South) asked me the unthinkable. “Jane,” he said. “Who should win this pageant?” My brain and mouth froze. Seeing the look on my face, my coach challenged me and asked, “Why are you here? Do you want to be the winner or not?”

I made the decision to be a winner…at life.

Your Mother is Always With You

Best Pearls Friend copy

Since Mother’s Day is upon us, I wrote this short poem to honor mothers everywhere, and in particular my mother. I miss her every day – her love for me, her laughter and her sense of humor.

Your mother is always with you…she’s the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street; she is the smell of beach in your fresh laundered socks;

she’s the cool hand on your brow when you’re not well. Your mother lives inside your laughter and she’s crystallized in every tear drop.

She’s the place you come from, your first home and she’s the map you follow with every step you take. She’s your first love and your first heartbreak.

And nothing on earth can separate you. Not time, not space…not death.

Share this poem with special friends who need encouragement today.

My Blessing Through Grief

Bury Me With My Pearls- Best-SellerA copy of “Bury Me with my Pearls” was resting on my coffee table; it seemed to beckon … “take me with you.”

It was like a divine voice was speaking to me.

I threw the book into my suitcase and quickly zipped the bag, and off we went to Charleston. I had a strange feeling something special was going to happen.

After a brief lunch, Thomas and I visited a Verizon Wireless store. After waiting for our turn a tall, slim girl approached me.  She quickly isolated the issue with my cell phone and checked on my data usage.  The young woman mentioned my ‘cycle.’  I could not help but quip that I had not heard that word in a while. She burst into laughter and said, “That is something my mother would have said. She died in July.”

Do You Celebrate Life’s Moments?

We all have celebrated moments that are unforgettable.  We freeze special times and make sure we will never forget a treasured experience. We celebrate milestones in our lives like marriage and the birth of babies.

There are also unforgettable moments that are afforded to us through hard work and never giving up on the desires of our hearts.

One of my most celebrated moments was speaking for 20,000 young people (out of 60,000) who attended my presentation at the National Future Farmers of America Convention.  Recently, FFA posted YouTube videos from the convention and I have loved watching amazing footage of hard work and achievement.  I have always heard that attending an FFA National Convention was indescribable and something you must see to believe. Click here to see my FFA presentation. @nationalffa #goffa

If you want to grow in your life, you have to be hungry.
